Strange January
Written by D. John Hayes
Saturday, 19 January 2008

January has been strange this year -- weather all over the place. I'm happy that we finally finished editing "Something Up There," Paul's first directing project to appear on our site.

I figured out why I am such a slow book reader. It is because I can't read just one book at a time. I currently have a bookmark in four different books. I need a speed-reading course to get through these -- Ringworld (Larry Niven), Atom (I forget the author), Conversations With God 1 (Walsh?), and A Brief History of Time (Hawking).

Movies I have seen recently -- The Ringer, Premonition (Japanese, started it -- need to finish), Broken, Assassino per fotomodelle, Firehouse Dog, Alice in Wonderland, Eugenie, Planet Terror, Knocked Up.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! Not too much to report, but I thought I should keep the blog thing going...

Books: I finished reading "Coldheart Canyon" by Clive Barker. Although I thought it was okay, I certainly did not enjoy it as much as I have some of his other works. It also seems like his is working that 'portal to another world' theme a little too much. I also read "How To Build a Time Machine" by Paul Davies. I don't know why, but I am a sucker for books on physics. This one is about the simplest one I've read. At a thin 125 pages, it doesn't dwell too long in the math mire -- rather it glosses over the hard stuff to present a simple view of black holes, worm holes, and relativity. Strangely, the very night I finished the book (and it only took one day to read), the History Channel aired an episode of their "Universe" series that discussed everything I had just read. So then I started reading "The Rants" by Dennis Miller. I remember enjoying his monologues on his HBO talk show, primarily because he has no fear in choosing sides and arguing his position. Of course, it helps that I agree with most of what he says...

Movies: Dear God -- I've seen a bunch since the last update. I got a few 'classics' for Christmas -- Airplane, Stripes, and Major League. Also watched:

Calvaire -- this one was strange and creepy, but well done. Good.

Saw 3 -- brutal. tired.

Final Destination 3 -- wow, it was convenient that the whole story of the previous movies was on the internet, or else these kids would have no idea what was going on!

Vital -- Shinya Tsukamoto makes some weird stuff (Tetsuo). This is his most mainstream movie that I've seen. It moves slowly, but kept me interested to the end.

Casshern: the Robot Hunter -- This is a stunning, gorgeous movie. However, I only got about halfway through it. I should finish it, why haven't I...?

more later!

Thanksgiving

It's Thanksgiving 2007. Let's see what's going on:

Current book: Coldheart Canyon - Clive Barker. I'm somewhere between page 150 and 200. Its okay so far, but I feel like Clive took a break on this one. The creative frenzy I'm come to expect from him hasn't hit yet. Perhaps it will come later. Still, I keep reading...

Last movie watched: Amateur Porn Star Killer. I have to give Shane Ryan credit for forcing himself into the business. The crazy thing is -- there is nothing to this movie at all. Shot on a handheld video cam, dialogue seems largely improvised, pacing is very slow. No fancy cuts, edits. Anybody watching this would have to come away thinking -- "If I had the balls to drop trou for a movie, I could have done this." But we didn't...and he did. So kudos, Shane. On a positive note, I thought the actress did a great job playing her part.

Current projects: Still working on video edits with Paul for "Something Up There." Thinking that "Laughing" might be the next video shoot, perhaps before the end of the year -- I need to write down the main monologue for that. Also been thinking a lot more about a book project that Charles and I started thinking about a year ago. New ideas are coming. Also, finishing up artwork/design for the "Lament: The Musical" CD. That should be available soon.

Staying home for Thanksgiving this year. Should be nice!

Control Me
Written by D. John Hayes
Tuesday, 05 December 2006

Tight grip, on my skin
Now let the fun begin
Cold sweat, on my face
You revel in my disgrace
You move, all around me
I sense you there even though I can't see...why...
You love
To control me
and I take it...on my knees

Unassisted Breathing
Written by Molly Prostka
Tuesday, 05 December 2006
You wondered once
Where yours was.
“Everyone else has one,
Has several,” you said
An apnea
Of the soul
Throwing bubbles of air
Into your words.
I couldn’t make you understand.

Almost Quiet
Written by Molly Prostka

It was almost quiet,
Except for the hum
Of the air conditioner.
He liked his air cold,
And processed.

She stayed because he had
Asked, in
An exercise of great
Courage whose
Momentum
Surged through his body
Propelled by the fear
In his own voice.

Below Blue Lines
Written by Molly Prostka

Little pieces of me
Bobbed dangerously
Above the blue lines of white paper.
They kept their heads above
Water
Spread before him in an offering.
